Rift & Quartered Maple Flooring
When rift or quartersawn, Maple (Acer saccharum) is both harder and more dimensionally stable than in plainsawn flooring. The face of rift & quartered maple presents an unobtrusive vertical grain appearance, with a light brown heartwood running down the edge of some pieces. Pure quartered pieces do exhibit a small figure or ray fleck, but this does not predominate in the floor.

Select Rift & Quartered Maple
As with plainsawn Maple, this is a predominantly light-colored floor that excludes knots, wormhole, birdpeck, and other such characteristics. However, it may be expected to present somewhat more light-brown heartwood than a plainsawn floor and to have slightly more contrast in the floor as laid. Wider widths will exhibit a larger percentage of brown, up to 15-20% in 5″ widths. Riftsawn pieces will predominate with only the occasional appearance of light figure in the floor from quartered pieces.
