The Durability of Hickory

Almost half again as hard as Red Oak, Hickory (Carya spp.) is the most durable and dent-resistant of the common American hardwoods. It is a wood full of contrast, owing to a high percentage of almost paper white sapwood set next to a dark chocolate-brown heartwood. Hickory accepts a stain well for homeowners who are attracted to its quiet grain and hardness but wish to tone down its color variation.

Carroll Hardwood hickory comes from the droughty hills of middle Tennessee and the ridges of the Western Highland Rim bordering the Tennessee River, where it grows slowly but in abundance.

Marked by the contrast between a light, often paper-white sapwood and dark, chocolate-brown heartwood, Select Hickory is informal, yet not rustic in tone. This grade excludes knots and has only the occasional bird peck or pin worm hole. It may contain the occasional brown, brownish-red, or even purple streak that provides even more interest in appearance.

Rift & Quartered Hickory flooring is available in widths 1 1/2″ – 4″. Clear Red (all heartwood) and Clear White (all sapwood) Hickory flooring is available in most widths. Longer widths than 7′ are also available. Call for pricing.

For a rustic appearance no species is superior to Hickory for a display of natural character. This grade has both open and tight knots, small bark pockets, unlimited bird peck and worm hole, and may exhibit occasional grey or blue in the sapwood. For those who want to display these natural characteristics, but want less contrast in appearance, Character Hickory is available in Antique Brown as well as a Natural finish.
